in spite of

Today's grammar point is --ni mo kakawarazu (～にもかかわらず), which means "although --"
or "in spite of ---." It works as a distinctive subordinate conjunction.
As in the first today's example, --ni mo kakawarazu is preceded by a noun. In this case, the
noun should indicate an action or state, such as renshū (練習) "practice," uso (うそ) "lie" or
ame (雨)"rain."
Similar expressions are noni and keredomo. --ni mo kakawarazu is used in written or formal
spoken Japanese, and also it is used when you want to emphasize the meaning of "contrary
to the expectations."


様々な対策にもかかわらず、今年の被害数は、前年同期と比べて約1.5倍と急増しています

さまざまなたいさくにもかかわらず、ことしのひがいすうは、ぜんねんどうきとくらべてや

Formation:
* Verb/i-adj. informal + ni mo kakawarazu
食べる；食べた にも かかわらず；even though someone ate
難しい；難しい にも かかわらず；even though something is difficult
* Noun + ni mo kakawarazu
努力；努力 にも かかわらず；in spite of one's efforts
雨；雨 にも かかわらず；in spite of rain
* Na-adj.stem + de aru/na no + ni mo kakawarazu
きれい な；きれい である　にも かかわらず; even though someone is beautiful.
きれい な；きれい なの 　にも かかわらず; even though someone is beautiful
Examples:
昨日会ったにもかかわらず、もう彼の名前を忘れた。
きのうあったにもかかわらず、もうかれのなまえをわすれた。
Even though I met him yesterday, I already forgot his name.

彼は、台風にもかかわらず、山登りに行った。
かれは、たいふうにもかかわらず、やまのぼりにいった。
He went mountain climbing in spite of the typhoon.
その靴は高かったにもかかわらず、彼女は、3足も買った。
そのくつはたかかったにもかかわらず、かのじょは、3ぞくもかった。
She bought the pairs of shoes even though they were expensive.
