Today's grammar point is:
[verb] + shika nai.
It means "can't help doing," "have no choice but to --." It is commonly used to mean "have to
do something because there is no other choice." It would sound strange if it were used in a
context where someone has to do something because of an obligation. In that case, --
nakereba naranai(～なければならない) would be used, as in the example below.
△明日8時の飛行機で出発するので、6時に家を出るしかない。
あした８じのひこうきでしゅっぱつするので、６じにいえをでるしかない。
Since my plane leaves at 8:00 tomorrow morning, I have no choice but to leave home at 6.
○明日8時の飛行機で出発するので、6時に家を出なければならない。
あした８じのひこうきでしゅっぱつするので、６じにいえをでなければならない。
Since my plane leaves at 8:00 tomorrow morning, I have to leave home at 6.
The similar expression is --zaru o enai (～ざるを得ない), which was introduced in the
previous lesson Upper Intermediate Lesson #08 - The Doctor is In 4.

Formation:
* Verb. dictionary form + shika nai
taberu shika nai (食べる しかない) "have no choice but to eat"
yasumu shika nai (休む しかない) "have no choice but to take a rest"
Examples:
彼は携帯電話を持ってないから連絡できない。待つしかないな。
かれはけいたいでんわをもってないかられんらくできない。まつしかないな。
We can't contact him because he doesn't have a cell phone. So, we have no choice but to
wait for him.
こんなひどい雨じゃ、ピクニックは中止するしかない。
こんなひどいあめじゃ、ピクニックはちゅうしするしかない。
Heavy rain like this leaves us no choice but to call off our picnic.
電車が動いていないから、タクシーで行くしかない。
でんしゃがうごいていないから、タクシーでいくしかない。
Because the train is out of service, we have no choice but to take a taxi.
